Skippy, who wandered into JA on Marty's suggestion that he become a drummer and wandered out again to find his greater destiny as a member of Moby Grape. Singer, composer, guitarist, legendary 60's casualty who bestowed upon us memorable tunes on "Takes Off", with Moby Grape, "Oar" and had a great loving heart, according to his former bandmates and friends. Departed way too soon, but left us material that musicians and fans continue to revere. Safe passage, Alexander!

Terry Hook
From the first years of the Jefferson Airplane, Terry Alan Hook was a devoted fan. He went to great lengths to attend JA/JS live shows, and he always enjoyed turning people on to their music. In the early seventies, Terry named his red Irish setter "Sunfighter" because of his affinity with that song. Terry was an amateur photographer, snapping dozens of photos of the band over the years. He was also a poet and writer; many of his stories were sea tales drawn from his years as a tugboat captain. Thus, he was known as "Captain Hook," "Tug," or just "Hook" to many. He was a colorful, charismatic character with a big heart and a beautiful soul. He left this world at the age of 52. May we imagine him now, sitting on a mountaintop, surrounded by several dogs, listening to "When The Earth Moves Again," one of Terry’s all-time favorite songs.

Marshall Homes
There is a guy at the pearly gates explaining to St. Peter that there is no "L" in his last name. St. Peter told him to wait a few so he sat down by the side of the road and played his Ric. There is a rather precarious embankment on the road to heaven, and this guy quickly figured out where it was. He's been helping those, especially attractive young women, whose chariots can't quite negotiate the curve.

Marshall was a neighbor from West Virginia... one of the most beautiful states there is. As I was walking Vinnie this morning I was looking at our apple tree in bloom and the red bud exploding in vibrant splashes of purple. I thought to myself that Marshall will miss these wonderful things that come upon us in the Spring. Maybe it is always Spring where he is now, and he will walk through those eternal hills pain free and with a smile on his face. I am reminded of a line the Tom Waits character speaks in Rumblefish. 'Time is a funny thing. You wake up one morning and find you have only 15 good summers left.' I know these times are not that far off for me... or for anyone for that matter. They may already be here, so I feel it is important to live every moment in every day as best I can.

Well, I just had a beautiful motorcycle ride on our back roads. Trees greening... tractors disking... red bud flaming... Usually I dedicate these rides to Dad... but today, I thought of Marshall... a man I never met... never knew.

Ride free to the edge of the world!

Of all the entries here, this is probably the hardest one for me to write, as Marshall was more than just a fellow member of the 2400fulton list - he was also a close personal friend. Those of us who were lucky enough to know him were much enriched by his presence, and are greatly diminished by his absence.

Jeff Wells
When Jeff died unexpectedly in May 2004, just after the end of Jefferson Starship's longest ever UK tour, the reaction showed just how loved he was - both by fellow fans and the band themselves. Below are a sample of many of the messages posted on A Deck in the days following his death.

Time will soften the pain, but thankfully not the memories, which is as it should be. My deepest condolences to all who loved him and were loved by him. Our family has lost a lovely, kind soul and the world is more empty place for his passing. My thoughts are with Jean and family. Lesley.

Diana & Prairie called a few minutes ago from a hotel in NYC where internet access isn't easy. They asked me to convey their great sadness, mourning Jeff, and to send their love to you and to the community here on deck. The last photo Prairie took in the U.K. was a beautiful one of Jeff. He & Diana feel so lucky to have known him, and to have recently had the chance to spend time with him (and the opportunity, Jean, to meet you). Tears made it hard to talk.

Diana: "I adored him. There was something so special about him. He was such a gentleman..."

A wicked grin, a sharp sense of humour, the ability to wind somebody up whilst keeping a completely straight face - an absolute belter of a guy. Beyond that he was a load of other great things - knowledgeable, helpful, and nice as pie. And modest - the sort of bloke who'd cringe with embarrassment to read this. We'd have struggled considerably in Italy last year without Jeff's experience and little bit of local knowledge. I'm just completely shocked at the news. Too soon, amigo, too soon. Jelly.
