| Name: | Aynsley Dunbar |
| Born: | January 10, 1946, Liverpool, England. |
Biography:
A former jazz drummer, who had been playing since the age of 11, Aynsley Dunbar moved into rock & roll in the 1960's, when he replaced a certain Ringo Starr in Rory Storm & the Hurricanes. He then drummed for the Mojos (1964-66), John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (1966-67) and the Jeff Beck Group (1967). He then formed two bands of his own, Aynsley Dunbar's Retaliation (1967-69), and Blue Whale (1970).
Moving to California, he joined Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention (1970-71), and also worked with former Zappa sidemen Flo & Eddie (1972-75). In addition to this, he also worked for David Bowie, Nils Lofgren, Lou Reed, and Ian Hunter, before joining the embryonic Journey in February 1974, replacing future Tubes and JS-TNG drummer Prairie Prince. Staying with the band until late 1978, he was eventually fired in very acrimonious circumstances, with the resultant lawsuits flying all over the place in the following few years.
Staying in San Francisco, he joined Jefferson Starship on the suggestion of ex-Zappa bassist Pete Sears, replacing the hospitalised John Barbata, at the same time as Mickey Thomas replaced Marty Balin. He stayed with the band until just after the sessions for "Winds of Change" were completed, when he was fired for undisclosed reasons and replaced by Donny Baldwin.
After leaving Jefferson Starship, he has continued to work with many of the world's top rock musicians including the Pat Travers Band, the Blindside Blues Band (1996), Eric Burdon's I Band (1996), the Best of the British Blues (1996-97) and Mogg & Way (1997). However, his most prominant role was playing on Whitesnake's eponymous 1987 million-seller. Unfortunately, he didn't fit the bands "big hair and tight trousers" image, and so didn't appear in the videos or join them on tour. The last reports of his progress (1998) place him as reportedly joining Mother's Army with ex-Rainbow and Deep Purple singer Joe Lynn Turner, ex-Night Ranger guitarist Jeff Watson and ex-Rainbow and Ozzy Osbourne bassist Bob Daisley.
