Biography:
Recruited to the Airplane to replace original bass player, Bob Harvey, Jack Casady first met Jorma Kaukonen via Jack's brother. They soon found themselves performing together in Washington clubs, before Jorma decided to try his luck on the west coast. When the Airplane decided to replace Harvey, Kaukonen persuaded the others to give Casady a chance, knowing that he had never actually played bass. As the Airplane developed, it was his powerful bass lines which helped shape the bands distinctive sound. A prolonged break in the Airplane's schedule allowed Casady and Kaukonen to return to their true love, Blues, with the formation of Hot Tuna. Eventually, their committment to Hot Tuna would prove to be one of the factors in the break-up of the Airplane, but to begin with, Tuna supported the Airplane. When the Airplane crashed in 1973, Hot Tuna continued until 1978, when they decided to take an extended break. Jack became involved with a semi-Punk band, SVT, before reuniting with Kaukonen in 1983 as Hot Tuna. Accepting an offer from Balin and Kantner in 1987, Casady became the C in the KBC Band and, later, participated in the short-lived Jefferson Airplane reunion in 1988-89. Continuing with Hot Tuna, he returned to working with Kantner in 1992 as one of the founder members of Jefferson Starship - The Next Generation, a position he retains today alongside his continuing committment to Hot Tuna.
