Over the years, I've collected quite a few quotes from the various members of the band. Below are some of the best of them.
"I feel as if I've been shitting without eating,
interlectually. I'm just all shit and no food. So what I'm going to do
is eat through my brain..........Feed my head, as a matter of
fact."
- Grace on leaving the band in '78.
"Paul is climbing Everest because it's the only mountain in
the area that he can pronounce!"
- Grace on Paul's Himalayan trip.
"Anything anybody said I did after nine o'clock at night is
probably true!"
- Grace.
"We figured if we did only our own marerial, audiences
wouldn't know when we were screwing up."
- Darby Slick on The Great Society.
"Pure LSD among thirteen other things."
- Paul on "Baxters."
"I didn't overdo them. I didn't underdo them either."
- Paul on his use of drugs.
"He's been writing the same song since 1968."
- Mickey Thomas on Paul Kantner in 1984.
"I'm going to run for president, and when I get elected,
I'll assasinate myself - That'll set a precedent!"
- Spencer Dryden.
"We are your parents worst nightmare...because we ARE your
parents!"
- Grace on the 1989 Airplane reunion tour.
"Of course, I've mellowed a little since I quit drinking
and drugging. My memory's a lot better too. To be completely honest, I
don't really remember a lot about the '60s....but from what I've
heard, I had a pretty good time."
- Grace
"We had two medicine cabinets, one labeled Hard Drugs, the
other Soft Drugs. One for recreational purposes, the other for medical
routines. I was always afraid of getting the mouthwash mixed up with
the mescaline, or taking tablets of aspirin instead of acid. Hell,
that could be dangerous, too much aspirin can be fatal!"
- Grace
"I remember it as being kind of fun. They maced us and we
just laughed and they kept telling us not to do stuff and we'd keep
doing it and I didn't care. So my nose runs; I've had colds."
- Grace's recollection of her and Paul's arrest in Akron,
OH
"I'm still waiting to get over puberty. I have not stopped
with what people ordinarily enjoy doing when they're about 16 -- which
is, fooling around. I'm the latest one up, the most obnoxious, and if
somebody says 'let's break into that store right there,' I'm probably
the one who would start doing it. I'm awful."
- Grace.
"We've been in there for so long I've had six different
houses in the time I've been in that one recording studio!"
- Grace on the Jefferson Starship's association with Wally
Heider's studio.
"They have good senses of humor, but they don't like what
I'm doing. I was never married to Paul and when I got pregnant my
mother said, 'Well, I guess I'm gonna have to tell your grandmother
sooner or later.' She called my grandmother up and said, 'Grace is
pregnant, but she's not gonna get married' and my grandmother said,
'I think she must be some kind of genius.'"
- Grace on her parents.
"China has always been easy for me to talk to and get along
with and hang out with. A psychic told me that my daughter and I were
very old souls and that we'd been together in all kinds of
permutations. I'm assuming that most of our stuff has pretty much been
cleared up, because it's just so easy to talk to her and to be her
mother and friend."
- Grace on her relationship with her daughter, China.
"My main abiding concern is, 'Will this keep me out of
traffic school? Hey, I'm famous now. I'm in the Rock And Roll Hall Of
Fame. Do I have to go to traffic school? Can't you let me out of
it?'"
- Paul on the Airplane's induction into the Rock And Roll
Hall Of Fame.
"I didn't give her any direction, I just told her to sing
it any way she wanted to. Can you imagine me trying to tell Grace
Slick how to sing?"
- Ex 4 Non-Blondes singer (and friend of China Kantner)
Linda Perry on working with Grace Slick.
